Not long after we got engaged, two very generous women in my life each offered to throw me a bridal shower - my aunt and a close family friend. Since it didn't make sense for me to have two showers, they decided to work in tandem to throw me one big, happy shower in mid-July.
Since David is a meteorologist, the the hostesses quickly settled on a weather-themed shower - appropriate on multiple levels! The invitations featured umbrellas, the centerpieces were designed to look like sun and clouds, and we even played a weather-themed game in which the guests had to guess the weather on the days David and I were born, as well as the average weather for our wedding day.
In addition to the weather game, we played two other games, since I enjoy a good game or two at a shower. The first game was a "this or that" style game, where the guests had to predict which option both David and I would choose from a list of opposites (think "road trip or plane travel," "soup or salad," etc). David and I played as well, and I was so nervous that we'd guess poorly for each other, or that he'd know me better than I know him. Out of 30 questions though, we each got 25 correct - which was also the high score for both his side and mine - whew!
For the last game, everyone stood in a circle and several of the guests (chosen at random) were given a wrapped prize. My cousin Anne (also a bridesmaid!) then read a story ostensibly about David and I. Whenever she said the word "right," the prizes was passed to the right, and whenever she said "left," the prizes were passed left. When the story ended, whoever was left with a prize was a winner. In keeping with the theme, the prizes were umbrellas.
While the weather theme was a nod to David, the menu was most certainly a nod to me. Since my favorite food has always been potatoes (I guess that's my Irish heritage for you!), my aunt planned the most amazing potato bar ever. It featured both baked potatoes and sweet potatoes, and all the fixings you could ever ask for. I was pretty much in heaven.
After we played the games and ate lunch, it was time to open presents. Our guests were unbelievably generous, so this took quite a while! Along with the gifts we received from our registries, we also received several personalized gifts, including a cross-stitch from both of our moms.
Having been to plenty of showers I thought I knew what to expect, but it's so different when you're the guest of honor! I was so touched that so many family and friends made the trip just for us, and I was overwhelmed by everyone's generosity. We're so lucky to have so many loving and wonderful people in our lives!
